Cuffs representation exam Q1

Analyse how representation is used in the episode to create meaning for a mainstream pre-watershed audience. (5 marks) Refer to the text you have studied in your answer.  One of the characters, Jake, is represented as a white homosexual male police officer. This is seen through Jake’s quote directed at Ryan “i’m gay” which evidently portrays his homosexuality. He challenges the stereotype as he is joining the police force which is typically seen as a tough, manly job. This creates meaning for a mainstream pre-watershed audience because homosexuality is accepted in the modern day, this is emphasised when Jake tell Ryan “i’m gay” and there is no reaction from Ryan. It also creates meaning because it is on at 8 o clock which means all audiences are accepted and young children will be affected by this. young children will accept this message because they would grow up with it and it will soon become natural for them.
