Textual analysis of Luther
Analyse how mise-en-scene is used in the extract to create meaning.
In the extract ‘Luther’, mise-en-scene is used to create meaning. It is located in a quiet alleyway in the middle of the day which contradicts the connotations of a 'crime' as most people would think of a crime to be in the darkness where no one can be seen. We first see the criminal through a tilt shot which creates an atmosphere of tension. This gives the audience a desire to find out who he is. He is wearing all black clothes which suggest he is trying to blend in with the crowd and not draw attention to himself.
The typical stereotype of a black African male suggests that he would be the criminal but it is the opposite in this case as they are challenging this stereotype. The connotations of black are evil, dark-minded and mischievous. The stereotype is being challenged as Luther is the officer who is tracking down the criminal and the audience would not expect this. The props such as the white gloves are used to focus our attention on Luther's troublesome acts and just him putting on these white gloves foreshadows the act of violence. The non-diegetic sound gets increasingly loud and fast as the criminal and Luther get nearer which builds a dramatic atmosphere of suspense. Especially when Luther punches the criminal and there is a quick load sound to emphasise the force of the punch which makes us sympathise with the character.

You have written a very good first attempt of textual analysis well done!
ReplyDeleteMake sure you refer predominantly to the mise-en-scene, as this is what the question asks you to focus on. It is great that you are referring to the different sound/camera shots, but always focus your point on the question that is beings asked.
When reflecting and perfecting, please put these changes in a green font colour.
Reflect and Perfect:
- Write the question just above your textual analysis
- What are the connotations of the colour black with regards to the criminal?
- You are correct, but please expand on your point in paragraph two - how is the stereotype of a black African male being challenged?
- Check for SPaG - Stereotype, of...
- Please embed the 'Luther' clip that you are textually analysing.
